Ahmad Mammadli's Health in Critical Danger, Immediate Release Now!

On May 6, 2025, journalist and activist Ahmad Mammadli was violently detained by the police and subjected to two days of torture. His lawyer, Mr. Elchin Sadigov, submitted an appeal regarding his client’s medical care. In response, the Medical Department of the Ministry of Justice of the Republic of Azerbaijan issued a document stating that, on May 29, 2025, an ophthalmologist invited to the institution examined Mr. Mammadli and diagnosed him with “OU—post-LASIK surgery condition of the cornea, chorioretinal dystrophy”, recommending outpatient treatment.
It should be emphasized that Mr. Mammadli suffers from genetic asthma. During the torture inflicted upon him by the police, he sustained blows to his eyes, which had previously undergone surgical procedures. As a result of these injuries, vision in one of his eyes has become severely blurred.
Furthermore, on September 3, 2025, the court hearing in the politically motivated criminal case against him was postponed, thereby extending his detention. This situation poses a serious risk to his health, as the conditions of imprisonment are incompatible with his medical needs.
We therefore urge the immediate release of Ahmad Mammadli under house arrest, in order to safeguard his health and fundamental rights.
