Turkey-Women in Rebellion!

Turkey-Women in Rebellion!

Women in Turkey occupied the streets with anger once again. The consecutive cases of femicide, child abuse and child murder are proof that Turkey is going through a terrible decay under the Erdogan government!

4 October on Istanbul, Semih Çelik murdered two young women, Ikbal and Ayşenur Halil, two hours apart. It is revealed that the perpetrator said ''I will kill you'' in a video he shooted to Uzuner but despite the legal complaints of the women and their families  no legal precaution to protect them was taken. The young woman's body was torn apart and thrown in the middle of the street. The other was also killed. Unfortunately, this horrific murder that occurred in broad daylight and was not the only case. Once the murder got on the case the first thing the government did was to bring

publication law!

24 September in İstanbul, in the most central district, Beyoglu, two men harassed a woman by driving her into a corner; they were released after a short custody. Thanks to the public outcry, the police had to arrest them again.

The proposal "Investigate the Murder of Narin Güran" presented to the Parliament was rejected by AKP-MHP votes! Narin Güran, who was an 8-year-old girl killed by her family members, was found dead in Diyarbakır. If the journalists had not paid attention to the case, she would be another case of “lost” children. The government and the family have close relationships and this link made the family believe that the murder would never be revealed. Turkey has been following this case for weeks!

In Antalya Manavgat, 23-year-old Zehra Gün was found dead in her boyfriend's house.

A woman who settled in Bursa after her divorce from her husband was murdered by being shot by her father-in-law in Eyüpsultan Istanbul, where she came to see her child.

This list goes by as new cases are happening nearly everyday.

In 2024, 240 women were murdered in Turkey. Now every day women wake up to news of femicides and violence. This means nearly every day dozens of women are being faced with femicides and violence. With the withdrawal from the Istanbul Convention, which is a contract opposing violence against women and women's rights, there was a serious increase in violence against women. Erdoğan’s withdrawal from the Istanbul convention with a political campaign encouraged more crimes against women, children, and LGBTI. Coming to 2024, we face a burst of violence cases against women.

Why Does Violence, Harassment, and Murder Against Women Increase?

In Turkey, we are ruled by a misogynist government. Tayyip Erdoğan's discourses and politics about women keep misogyny alive and motivated. Besides, the AKP government, with greater courage than before, backs the perpetrators of violence, rapists, and murderers and releases them on the streets.

In the case of Emine Bulut who was killed in front of her children in 2019, it was revealed that she took shelter in a police station for about 29 minutes before the murder, and police officers let her go right after her ex-husband walked away. Nothing has been done about the case. This is exactly why today we are still experiencing these atrocities. A man who killed two women puts his plans into video and threatens those women and there is not a single caution. The regime is openly in a war with women!

Turkey has been a country of organized crime, heroin, economic collapse, impoverishment, and oppression. Erdoğan’s authoritarian regime with its fascist coalition partner paves the way for terrible living conditions for the children and the women who are the most oppressed.

Therefore all these cases of violence, and murder should not be considered individual crimes. The withdrawal of the Istanbul Convention, the AKP government's policy of impunity, and misogynist mentality feed up the atrocities that are happening and we must know all of these are completely products of a system!

Women's Liberation is on the Street, in Organized Struggle!

Like all other conservative and oppressive regimes, the Erdoğan regime also proposes only individual punishment against violence against women. Talking about more severe punishments and even the death penalty at a minimal level serves to distract the issue from social problems. We reject this manipulative discourse that hides the responsibility of those in power. For women to establish equal and free lives, they need jobs, the social conditions necessary to establish an independent life, and real protective politics. There are millions of young women who feel ruthlessly oppressed by the Erdoğan regime. Tens of millions of poor workers are already sick of the crisis. We must organize, become stronger, and destroy Erdoğan’s regime that is hostile not only to women but to all working people. We call on women to be at the forefront against this regime that has turned into a giant national and international crime network!
