Remembering Amini and the Iran Protests
Mahsa Amini was killed, 2 years ago today (16th of September, 2022), in Iran, Tehran. She died in Tehran hospital after being detained by the morality police for not covering in accordance with the law. She was severely beaten and brutalized in the police station and died because of the damage, even though the Mullah regime claims that she had a heart attack and fell into a coma. The echoes of her killing by the Islamic morality police and the subsequent mass demonstrations and strikes are still present to this day.
The protests that emerged after the killing of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini have not only spread nationwide but have also become a global solidarity movement, with millions of Iranians abroad organizing support actions around the world. On September 18, a nationwide general strike was called from Kurdistan Province to Tehran. On September 20, the protests spread to 16 of Iran’s 31 cities.
Hundreds of thousands have joined the movement, which has resisted the headscarf ban for months and demonstrated significant resistance to the regime on women’s rights. During the months-long protests, 537 people were killed and thousands were detained. According to reports in the Iranian media, around 70 of the security forces who opened fire on the people and tried to suppress the protests with horrific violence lost their lives. Seven people accused of killing security forces were executed. On the second anniversary of Amini’s death, shopkeepers in her hometown of Sakkiz and surrounding cities closed their shops.
In the images shared on social media, shopkeepers who joined the calls to close their shops were seen closing their shops in Sakkiz and surrounding cities.
Even though the actions have largely subsided both in Iran and around the world, the Shah regime is still deeply in fear of a new wave of uprisings in Iran and desperately tries to prevent it. Today, the regime has stationed many armed forces, blocked roads leading to Amini's and even raised the water level of a nearby river so that protestors and her loved ones can't pass through to get to the grave. The widely unpopular capitalist Mullah regime depends on sole oppression and violence to stay in power.
The liberation of the working class and the oppressed peoples will come through the collective action of the masses to topple the capitalist Mullah’s regime.
