Strong Solidarity of the Partido Obrero with the Revolutionaries in Turkey
The international support campaign launched by the Istanbul Labor, Peace, and Democracy Platform against the AKP-MHP government's widespread wave of arrests against the left has received strong support from Argentine revolutionaries, trade unionists, labor and women's organizations. A total of 77 workers, unionists and students, 4 of whom were SEP members, have had their homes raided and have been arrested. There is a growing support from all over the world against this oppressive attack of Erdoğan.
Guillermo Kane, the leader of the PO, also sent a solidarity message to the rally that took place June 2:
“Though we are thousands of kilometers away, we have been following the persecution of workers, young people, and, particularly, revolutionary militants by the Erdogan government closely.
Erdogan's government, weakened by electoral defeat, evidently wants to stamp out the opposition that can change the growing anger against his government, and the precarious labor conditions and austerity policies it has imposed into a powerful social force. This will not come from. Bourgeois opposition and trade union bureaucracy, but from the revolutionary left and class struggle unions.
Not only have they attacked the May 1st demonstrations with police repression, but they persecute comrades for having defended these working-class demonstrations.
We demand the immediate liberation of those comrades still held in prison. We are in complete solidarity with revolutionary organization in Turkey and demand full political freedom, free union organization and free political rights for the student movement.
We fight for these same rights against the ultraright Milei government in Argentina. It tries everyday to attack working class organizations, and our party in particular with defamation, fake news media campaigns, police repression and legal persecution.
More than ever, it is clearly one struggle, one class, in the whole world.
Free all detained for the May Day demonstrations. Free all political prisoners. No more persecution and repression against workers organizations in Turkey.
On behalf of the Partido Obrero of Argentina Central Committee
Guillermo Kane”
The text opened for signature by the joint forces of the left in Istanbul for international support and the strong support given by the Argentine revolutionaries are below:
May 1st cannot be judged!
May Day 2024 was the subject of demonstrations, events, and rallies in Turkey and all over the world. Millions of workers, laborers, youth, and women filled the streets against the assaults of social destruction, hunger, poverty, lack of future, and imperialist war.
Workers and laborers refused to pay the bill for the economic crisis with the so-called medium-term program. Women took to the streets against the increasing number of murders and violence and demanded equal pay for equal work. Young people took to the square arm in arm with their demands for free, qualified, and scientific education against unemployment, lack of future, and reactionization in education. They shouted for the fraternity of peoples against the bombs raining down on the peoples of the Middle East and Palestine.
May Day Square is the Taksim Square!
On May 1, 1977, Taksim Square took its place in the history of struggle as the celebration and commemoration area of workers and laborers after the massacre that resulted in hundreds of thousands of people participating in Taksim Square. Including the decision of the Constitutional Court on this issue, Taksim Square was declared as the May Day area. Taksim was won both as an achievement in the history of our struggle and as a constitutional right.
However, the AKP government once again attacked workers, laborers, and young people who wanted to go to Taksim Square. As a result of the attacks, more than 250 of our friends were detained under torture. 75 of our friends were arrested. Arrest warrants were issued for many of our friends.
Let's grow solidarity against oppression!
The AKP government does not recognize its own laws and wants to intimidate all social opposition with oppression and tyranny in order to make the laborers pay the bill for the deepening economic crisis in the country. It wants to immobilize trade unions, and progressive and revolutionary subjects against all the problems with violence, torture, and arrest attacks.
However, this exploitative order and its representative AKP government should know that our struggle will continue. As revolutionaries and progressive forces, our struggle against increasing oppression and tyranny will continue uninterruptedly. We will free our imprisoned friends.
As revolutionaries from Turkey, we call on you to raise international solidarity against the terror of oppression, tyranny, and arrest here.
