Palestinian Workers Call for Solidarity with the Workers of the World!
The Palestinian General Federation of Trade Unions called on the world's workers to show solidarity with the of Gaza on 1 May.
"We call on our brothers and sisters in the international trade union movement to organise collective actions on 1 May and on 15 May Nakba Day to show their solidarity with Palestine through collective actions affecting working life," the Palestinian General Federation of Trade Union Confederation (PGFTU) said in a statement. "Raise your voice and take action to disrupt the Israeli military occupation and the flow of trade and investment that leads to the exploitation of Palestinian workers," the statement continued
"As governments continue to turn a blind eye to what is happening, we are speaking directly to you with the tradition of trade union internationalism," the announcement said: "Fellow workers, especially those in the arms and transport sectors, your livelihood does not depend on the destruction of our homeland and our lives. While we understand the importance of the struggle for bread, we invite you to think about the products you produce and transport and where they will ultimately be used. Employment should never be at the expense of countless Palestinian lives. As those directly affected by internationally produced and transported weapons, the pain of one is the pain of all."
The statement made the following call to the workers of the world:
- Refuse to transport goods to or from Israel.
- Organise work stoppages or slowdowns.
- Organise educational meetings in your union branch to discuss the Palestinian struggle.
- Distribute leaflets or brochures to inform your colleagues or invite them to action.
- Organise petitions in the workplaces calling for specific actions or policy changes, such as withdrawal of pension funds from companies complicit in the occupation, boycott measures against complicit companies, etc.
